Tuition and Workshops
Learn from a leading professional photographer with photography and work-flow tuition.
Have you recently set up your own studio facility? Maybe you are looking to bring some of your photography requirements in-house? Many businesses large and small are doing just this today and are exploiting the ease of access which digital equipment has brought to photography, particularly, when it comes to simple product photography or images for websites. Having an internal facility and trained staff can offer an efficient, fast turn around on demand solution to sourcing photography, but whilst there’s plenty of retailers happy to provide you with the equipment, advice tends to dry up once your new equipment has arrived and you’re setting up your first shots. This is where our commercial photography training will get your facility and people producing a good standard of images with tuition specific to your needs and situation.
Having worked as a professional photographer for over 20 years I have accumulated a great depth of knowledge and experience which is an ideal background for setting you up with the skills to work efficiently and effectively in your own environment be it purpose built, a quiet corner of your offices or out on locations.
Case study: Neil Thornton, Le Papillon Patisserie.
Neil is the owner of Le Papillon Patisserie in Woking. Along side the day-to-day patisserie business he has a passion and growing reputation for producing highly crafted sumptuous wedding and celebration cakes ranging from the traditional to the extraordinary, which can also be tailored to each clients desires. Bearing in mind the bespoke nature of some of the product Neil needs to record the cakes he produces to show future clients and also for marketing material and social media etc. But to send each cake to a photographer as it’s produced is both inappropriate as well as impractical.
The obvious answer is to shoot it yourself but having invested in lighting equipment and turned part of the patisserie into a temporary studio they realised they needed to get more out of their shoots. Photography tuition from Adrian Lyon brought about a huge improvement in their results though gaining a greater understanding of how to setting up their shots, different lighting approaches and getting the best out of their camera through good technique and post production. In the main this was done using their own equipment and on the their premises. Now they have the skills specific to their needs and can be uploading great images to social media almost as soon as a cake is finished (that’s made, not eaten!).
Neil had this to say about his course, “For years we had been taking what we thought were reasonable pictures to promote our products. It wasn’t until our coaching with Adrian that we realised just how amateur these were and that by changing our approach we could turn our cakes from one dimensional amateur images into magazine worthy pieces of art! We are truly amazed at how worthwhile the classes were and would highly recommend them to anyone wishing to improve the quality of their marketing images. Adrian was easy to work with, very thorough and extremely professional.”

How does it work?
Tuition can take the form of a range of modules designed to cover all aspects of photography which include basics such as cameras and lenses through setting up and lighting your shots to colour management and of course software essentials such as Photoshop. Alternatively a course can be tailored to your specific requirements, products or situation. After discussing your needs we can choose to take a modular route or we can develop a course specific to your level and requirements, be it beginner or advanced, which will be focused around getting the best out of you, your equipment and facilities, but importantly, be specific to your needs whether that’s a studio environment for product shots or a location environment if you’re an interior designer or estate agent for example. I’m also happy to provide advice on what items of equipment may benefit you in the future as part of your training or offer a consultancy in advance of you setting up (although I don’t sell any equipment).
While principally geared towards business to business training for one to one or small groups looking to develop commercially orientated skills I’m also able to provide training to anyone who wishes to further their photography or is struggling to deal with a specific part of their work-flow like processing raw files or getting your prints to match your screen for example. What ever your needs we can design tuition to suit.
